What is Gastric Bypass?

Gastric Bypass surgeries help to lose a large amount of weight in a few months. The operating staff makes small incisions to separate the upper part of the stomach from the rest to create a new, smaller pouch. The new pouch is then attached to the small intestine. Thus, the food “bypasses” the stomach and goes directly to the intestines. With the reduction of the stomach, patients begin to feel full faster than before, which leads to less hunger and eating much less during the day.

Gastric bypass is a laparoscopic surgery, that is, not an open surgery. Only a few incisions (about 1 cm) are made so that the area can be operated by the doctor. It is done under general anaesthesia.

Who Can Have Gastric Bypass?

If a patient has a BMI over 38 and is still struggling to lose weight after trying a few diets and exercises, gastric bypass is a great option.

Gastric Bypass Techniques

Two common gastric bypass techniques preferred by most surgeons are Roux-En-Y and Mini Gastric Bypass. Appropriate technique may be different for each patient. The doctor decides during the consultation which method is better for a particular patient.

Period After Surgery

After surgery, patients can easily feel fullness by taking small amounts of food, and after a while, this satiety turns into loss of appetite.

Total food intake is significantly reduced. Due to the reduced size of the newly formed stomach and reduced food absorption, the instructions of the surgeon and dietitians should be followed for the use of necessary vitamin and mineral supplements. Thus, the patient can lose weight without losing vitamins and minerals.
